Metal Porch Roofs and Patio Covers in DFW: Cost, Pitch and Permits

Dark bronze standing seam metal patio cover roof attached to the back of a brick home in Plano, Texas

A metal porch roof or patio cover from Architectural Metal Panels costs $25 per square foot of roof surface, installed, in our standard 24-gauge Galvalume steel with a Kynar 500 finish. That is about $7,500 for a 300-square-foot patio cover. Many DFW porch roofs are shallow, so the panel matters as much as the price: snap-lock standing seam needs more pitch, while mechanically seamed panels are built for low slopes.

Prices on this page are as of October 2026. We confirm the final price after measuring the roof, and your written estimate lists exactly what is included.

How much does a metal porch roof cost in Dallas-Fort Worth?

Our installed price for a porch roof, patio cover or small addition roof is $25 per square foot of roof surface in 24-gauge Kynar steel, or $24 per square foot for the 26-gauge SMP value option. At three common sizes:

Roof surfaceTypical project24-gauge Kynar26-gauge SMP
150 sq ft (about 10 x 15 ft)Front porch or entry roof$3,750$3,600
300 sq ft (about 12 x 25 ft)Back patio cover$7,500$7,200
450 sq ft (about 15 x 30 ft)Large covered patio or outdoor kitchen$11,250$10,800
Worked examples at our posted prices as of October 2026, before add-ons. Not a quote.

Roof surface is measured along the slope and includes the overhang, so it usually runs a little larger than the floor area underneath. If your porch needs framing, decking or removal of an old roof, the written estimate spells out what applies.

What add-ons change a porch roof price?

  • Skylights: $1,000 each to fabricate and install custom metal flashing. A skylight keeps a deep patio cover from darkening the rooms behind it.
  • Pipe boots: $200 each where a plumbing vent or other pipe passes through, more common on additions than open patio covers.
  • Vented ridge: $45 per linear foot with vented Z closures, for an enclosed addition with attic space to ventilate.

Should a porch get 24-gauge Kynar or 26-gauge SMP?

Choose 24-gauge Kynar if the porch faces the street or you want a dark color. It is roughly 28% thicker than 26-gauge and resists hail dents better, and Kynar 500 (PVDF) paint resists the fading and chalking that Texas sun drives. The 26-gauge SMP option suits a light-colored patio cover out back on a tighter budget.

Why does a porch roof cost more per square foot than a whole roof?

Because much of the work on a porch is fixed no matter how small the roof is. Our whole-house price is $15 per square foot of roof; on a porch, the same kinds of work are spread over far fewer square feet.

  • Setup. Loading, travel, ladders, safety gear, protecting landscaping and cutting panels to length happen on every job, large or small.
  • Trim. Eave, rake and wall trim run the whole perimeter, and a small roof has a lot of perimeter for its size.
  • Flashing to the house. The porch-to-wall joint is the most leak-prone detail on the job and needs flashing bent to the panel profile in our own Forney shop, whatever the roof size.
  • Minimum crew time. A crew still travels, sets up, installs, cleans up and inspects, even when the roof takes part of a day.

The geometry makes the point. A 10-by-15-foot porch roof has about 50 feet of edge and wall line for 150 square feet, roughly one foot of trim or flashing for every 3 square feet. A simple 40-by-50-foot roof plane has about one foot for every 11. For whole-house numbers, see our metal roof cost guide.

What pitch does a metal porch roof need?

Snap-lock standing seam typically needs about 3:12 or steeper, while mechanically seamed panels can go much flatter, with some manufacturers rating them as low as 0.5:12 to 1:12. Porch roofs are often built shallow to stay under second-story windows or the main eave, so we check the pitch before choosing a panel.

Exposed-fastener (R-panel, corrugated)Screws with rubber washers through the panelVaries by panel and manufacturerDetached covers and carports on a budget; washers typically need attention in 10-15 years
We follow the manufacturer’s published slope limit for the exact panel.

On low-slope porches and additions we use double-lock panels over high-temperature self-adhered underlayment, which low-slope metal needs under DFW heat. Floating clips let panels move through 100-degree afternoons and freezes like January 2024’s 89 straight hours at or below 32 degrees. An open patio cover can also catch wind from underneath, so higher uplift ratings count after storms like May 28, 2024, with gusts near 80 mph. See standing seam metal roofing, or corrugated and R-panel roofing for a detached cover.

How do you check your porch roof’s pitch?

Pitch is how many inches the roof rises for every 12 inches it runs. If the porch has exposed rafters, hold a level horizontally against the underside of one, mark 12 inches along it and measure straight up to the rafter: 2 inches means 2:12. Don’t climb onto the roof; we measure pitch at every estimate.

Why do shingled porch roofs leak?

If a shingled porch leaks in every hard rain, suspect the slope. Shingles shed water by overlapping and need pitch to keep wind-driven rain from backing up under them, and DFW thunderstorms commonly drop 1 to 2 inches of rain an hour. A seamed metal panel running wall to eave has no laps across the slope. If the porch is already metal and the leak is small, a metal roof repair may be enough.

How should a metal porch roof tie into the house?

With metal flashing that laps under the wall’s weather barrier or is counterflashed into the brick, never with sealant alone. Ask every bidder how they will handle it.

  • Headwall flashing where the porch roof meets the wall, bent to the panel profile and tucked behind siding and house wrap.
  • Counterflashing on brick, set into a cut mortar joint so water runs over the flashing, not behind it.
  • Sidewall flashing ending in a kick-out that sends water into the gutter instead of down the wall.
  • Clearance under windows, which often limits how much pitch a porch can have.
  • Transitions to shingles, with metal flashing lapped under the shingle courses above.

Does a metal porch roof need gutters?

Usually, if it drains over steps, an entry, a walkway or a patio. Metal sheds water fast, and without a gutter it lands where people walk and splashes the foundation. If the main roof drains onto the porch, the porch gutter carries that water too, so we size it for the total area and point the downspout away from the slab, which matters on North Texas expansive clay. Below a main-roof valley, consider a 6-inch gutter, which holds about 67% more water per foot than a 5-inch. See seamless gutter installation.

Do you need a permit for a metal porch roof or patio cover?

It depends on your city and scope. Re-covering an existing porch differs from building a new patio cover, which a city may treat as new construction and review for framing and attachment. We check the rules for your address and pull the permit where required.

  • Frisco, Plano and McKinney: we pull the city permit where required. In Historic Downtown McKinney, preservation guidelines can also affect roofing.
  • Fort Worth: a full roof replacement needs a building permit even with the same material, typically approved in about three business days; plan for it if you re-roof the house and porch together.
  • Dallas: roofing contractors register with the city, a whole-roof replacement needs a re-roof permit, and some older neighborhoods sit in conservation districts with their own exterior standards.

Will your HOA approve a metal porch roof?

Usually, with a submittal. A standing seam porch is often an easier ask than a whole standing seam roof, but most HOA neighborhoods in suburbs like Frisco still want to see the product and color first. Texas Property Code §202.011 protects impact-resistant shingles that resemble the neighborhood’s roofs; standing seam is not named, so a porch roof usually goes to architectural review. We prepare the package: color chip, product data and a photo of where the roof goes. Our guide to getting HOA approval for a metal roof covers the full process.

How do you match a metal porch roof to your existing roof?

Match the color family and trim, not necessarily the material. A standing seam porch on a shingle house is a deliberate accent, while a porch on a metal house should match the main roof as closely as possible.

On a shingle house

Pull the panel color from the darkest shingle tone or the trim, such as charcoal or dark bronze, in a low-gloss Kynar finish that won’t look shiny beside granular shingles. If you may switch the main roof to metal later, pick a color you would carry across the house, including metal shingles that pair with a standing seam porch.

On a metal house

Bring the original color name or a scrap panel, and we match seam height, panel width and color as closely as current products allow. A new panel can look slightly different beside an older roof at first, especially an SMP finish, which fades faster than Kynar. If the main roof is near the end of its life, ask us to price both on one written estimate.

What this means for DFW homeowners

A porch roof packs the same decisions as a whole roof into a few hundred square feet. Before you collect bids:

  1. Measure the roof, not the floor, and compare bids on the same square footage.
  2. Check the pitch. Below about 3:12, ask for a mechanically seamed panel rated for that slope.
  3. Get the tie-in in writing: headwall, sidewall, kick-out and brick counterflashing.
  4. Plan the water. Gutter and downspout belong in the bid.
  5. Line up approvals. HOA approval and any permit come before materials are ordered.
  6. Set the budget from the examples above, or run your exact porch size through the calculator on this page.

Metal porch roofs and patio covers: frequently asked questions

How much does a metal porch roof cost in Dallas-Fort Worth?

Our installed price for a porch roof, patio cover or small addition roof is $25 per square foot of roof surface in 24-gauge Kynar steel, or $24 per square foot in 26-gauge SMP. A 300-square-foot patio cover works out to about $7,500 in 24-gauge before add-ons. We confirm the final price after measuring.

Why does a porch roof cost more per square foot than a whole roof?

Setup, trim, flashing to the house and minimum crew time are largely fixed, and a small roof spreads them over fewer square feet. A porch also has far more edge and wall line per square foot than a large roof, and every foot of it needs trim or flashing.

What is the minimum pitch for a metal porch roof?

It depends on the panel. Snap-lock standing seam is typically used at about 3:12 and steeper. Mechanically seamed panels can go much lower, with some manufacturers rating them for 0.5:12 to 1:12. We measure the pitch and use a panel rated for it, typically double-lock on low-slope porches.

Do I need a permit for a metal patio cover in DFW?

It depends on the city and the scope. Re-covering an existing porch differs from building a new patio cover, which a city may review as new construction. We check the rules for your address and pull the permit where required, including in Frisco, Plano and McKinney.

Can a metal porch roof match a shingle roof?

Yes, as a deliberate accent. Pick a panel color from the darkest shingle tone or the trim, such as charcoal or dark bronze, in a low-gloss finish so it does not look shiny next to granular shingles. In an HOA neighborhood, the color will likely need approval first.

Does a metal porch roof need a gutter?

Usually, if it drains over steps, an entry, a walkway or a patio. Metal sheds water fast, and DFW storms commonly drop 1 to 2 inches of rain an hour. A seamless gutter with a downspout aimed away from the foundation keeps water off visitors and away from the clay soil around your slab.
