The Cedar Look Without the Cedar

Metal Shake Roofing for Dallas-Fort Worth Homes

Metal shake roofing gives Dallas-Fort Worth homes the deep shadow lines of hand-split cedar in steel or aluminum that will not rot, split or feed a fire. Architectural Metal Panels installs three systems: EDCO ArrowLine Shake and EDCO Generations HD in PVDF-finished steel, and Classic Country Manor Shake in interlocking aluminum. Panels interlock with no exposed screws, and the embossed texture hides small hail marks that show on flat metal.

What Is Metal Shake Roofing?

Metal shake is a stamped metal panel shaped and textured like split cedar, finished with baked-on paint and installed as interlocking panels over solid decking. One panel covers several wood shakes. The look comes from the embossing depth and the shadow line at each course; the performance comes from the metal and the interlock.

How is a metal shake panel made?

Painted coil, steel or aluminum, goes through a press that raises the shake pattern and forms the locking edges. The paint is applied to the coil first: PVDF on EDCO steel, and a Kynar 500-based finish with heat-reflecting pigments, which Classic calls HI-R, on aluminum. On the roof, each panel hooks into the course below and the panel beside it, and fasteners go through a flange the next course covers. Nothing penetrates the exposed face, which is the same principle that makes standing seam outlast screw-down panels.

Which Metal Shake Systems Do We Install?

Three: two in steel from EDCO and one in aluminum from Classic Metal Roofing Systems. Ratings and warranty terms below are the manufacturers’ published figures; we hand you the current documents for the product you choose.

EDCO ArrowLine Shake: steel, four-way interlock

ArrowLine is a steel shake panel with a locking edge on all four sides, so every panel is captured by its neighbors rather than held by fasteners alone. EDCO finishes it in PVDF and rates it UL Class 4 for impact, with wind testing to 160 mph, per the manufacturer’s published data. EDCO’s published warranty is lifetime, non-prorated, covers materials and labor, includes multi-decade fade protection and perforation coverage, and transfers to a later owner. The PVDF finish carries a non-nutrient additive to resist mold and mildew, which matters in DFW humidity. Colors run from cedar and sandtone to pewter and charcoal, and the panel can also go on sidewalls.

EDCO Generations HD: steel, high-definition cedar

Generations HD uses deeper, higher-definition stamping to copy weathered, hand-split cedar more closely than ArrowLine, in the same PVDF-finished steel. EDCO publishes the same UL Class 4 rating, 160 mph wind test and lifetime non-prorated warranty; fade protection is stated at 40 years, allowing no color change beyond five Hunter units. It comes in nine colors, from cedar and sandtone to Hartford green and classic red. Choose it when the roof is seen up close, from a porch or a short front yard.

Classic Country Manor Shake: aluminum, interlocking

Country Manor Shake is a rigid aluminum alloy panel from Classic Metal Roofing Systems with an interlock on every edge and the HI-R reflective finish. Aluminum will not rust, weighs less than steel and suits lakeside homes and lightweight framing. Ten colors run from black and deep charcoal to caramel and terra red. Classic publishes impact and wind listings by product; we supply the current rating letter with your HOA and insurance submittal.

Will an HOA Approve a Metal Shake Roof?

Usually, and often more easily than any other metal roof. Texas Property Code Section 202.011 bars an HOA that allows shingles from prohibiting wind- and hail-resistant or energy-saving shingles that resemble the subdivision’s roofing, are more durable and of equal or better quality, and match nearby homes. A cedar-look metal shake on a street built with wood shake or shake-pattern composition roofs is written for that test.

Architectural review still applies, so we prepare the submittal: a sample panel, the color matched to the street, the manufacturer’s impact rating and the statute language. It is a routine request in Rockwall, Heath, Frisco, Plano and Southlake, where shake-roofed streets from the 1990s and 2000s are coming up for replacement. Our HOA approval guide walks through what committees ask for.

How Much Does a Metal Shake Roof Weigh?

Very little. Aluminum shake runs roughly 40 to 50 pounds per 100 square feet and steel shake roughly 100, against several hundred pounds for the same area of asphalt shingles and far more for concrete tile. Ordinary framing carries it without reinforcement, and replacing a heavy roof on an older house in Garland or Mesquite typically lightens the load on the rafters.

Can metal shake be installed over existing shingles?

Some systems are approved by their manufacturers over one flat layer where local code allows it. We still recommend a tear-off on most DFW homes: interlocking panels want a flat, solid base, hail-bruised shingles hide soft decking, and a tear-off lets us install high-temperature underlayment and photograph the deck for your insurer. Tear-off runs $1.25 per square foot plus $1,000 for each 40-yard dumpster, and a second existing layer adds $0.75 per square foot. Our post on metal roofs over shingles in Texas covers the code and permit side.

How Does Metal Shake Handle DFW Hail, Wind and Heat?

Well, with one honest caveat about giant hail. Texas has led the nation in major hail events for 11 straight years (NICB/Verisk). The EDCO systems carry a UL Class 4 rating as published, meaning a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet caused no crack or rupture, and the shake texture breaks up small dents that would show on a flat pan. Stones like the 4.5-inch hail reported near Cresson in April 2026 can still mark any metal, and many Texas policies exclude cosmetic dents that do not leak, so read your endorsement. TDI recognizes Class 4 for premium credits, with the amount set by each carrier; we supply the documentation.

Wind is where the interlock earns its keep: EDCO’s 160 mph test figure sits well above the roughly 80 mph gusts of the May 28, 2024 storm, and a panel captured on four sides has no loose edge for uplift to grab. Heat is handled by the finish and the layers beneath. PVDF resists the fading and chalking that a summer UV index of 9 to 10 inflicts on cheaper paints, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Florida Solar Energy Center research puts the cooling savings of cool metal roofing at up to 25% against dark shingles, depending on color, insulation and ventilation. Under the panels we use underlayment rated 240 F or higher, and short interlocking panels absorb thermal movement at every joint.

What Does Metal Shake Roofing Cost in DFW (as of 2026)?

National 2026 cost guides put metal shingle-type roofs at about $10.50 per square foot installed in steel and about $14 in aluminum, with premium aluminum at $14 to $22; shake profiles sit toward the upper half because of the deeper stamping and extra trim. For reference, our published whole-house standing seam rate is $15 per square foot and porch roofs run $25. Shake is quoted per project from current manufacturer pricing, and we show both numbers side by side.

  • Steel (EDCO) versus aluminum (Classic), and the color family you choose
  • Roof complexity: hips, valleys, dormers and pitch
  • Tear-off layers, decking repairs and dumpsters
  • Vented ridge at $45 per linear foot and pipe boots at $200 each
  • Pitches of 8/12 and steeper, which add $2 per square foot

Run your own numbers in the metal roof cost calculator. Over 50 years, one metal roof usually replaces two or three shingle roofs; the lifetime roofing page lays out that math.

Metal Shake vs Standing Seam vs Metal Shingle: Which One?

Shake wins on cedar looks and HOA fit, standing seam on low slopes and solar, and metal shingle on a slate or low-profile appearance. All three last 40 to 70 years in Texas.

What Dallas-Fort Worth Homeowners Say About Architectural Metal Panels

Metal Shake Questions From DFW Homeowners

Is metal shake roofing rated for hail?

EDCO publishes a UL Class 4 impact rating for ArrowLine Shake and Generations HD, the highest class, and Classic lists ratings by product. Class 4 means no cracking or rupture from a 2-inch steel ball, not no dents; the shake texture hides small marks, and cosmetic-damage exclusions may apply to your policy.

Will my HOA approve a metal shake roof?

Usually. Texas Property Code Section 202.011 protects wind- and hail-resistant shingles that resemble the neighborhood’s roofing and match its look, and cedar-look metal shake fits that test on shake-roofed streets. Architectural review still applies, and we prepare the submittal.

How much does metal shake roofing cost?

As of 2026, national guides put metal shingle-type roofs at about $10.50 per square foot installed in steel and about $14 in aluminum, with premium aluminum at $14 to $22; shake profiles sit toward the upper half. We quote shake per project and show it beside our published standing seam rate of $15 per square foot.

Steel or aluminum metal shake: which is better in DFW?

Steel for most inland DFW roofs, because it is stiffer and dents less in hail; EDCO’s steel shakes carry published Class 4 ratings. Aluminum, as in Classic Country Manor Shake, cannot rust and weighs about half as much, which suits lakeside homes and lightweight framing.

Can metal shake go over my existing shingles?

Some systems are approved over one flat layer where code allows it. We usually recommend a tear-off in DFW so we can replace soft decking, install high-temperature underlayment and give your insurer deck photos. Tear-off is $1.25 per square foot plus $1,000 per 40-yard dumpster.

Does metal shake look fake up close?

Less than you would expect. Deep stamping, blended colors and a matte PVDF finish give it real shadow lines, and Generations HD adds high-definition weathered-cedar texture for roofs seen from a porch or a second story. We bring full-size samples so you can judge it on your own house.

How long does a metal shake roof last?

Professionally installed metal roofs typically last 40 to 70 years in Texas, against about 15 to 20 for asphalt in DFW heat and hail. EDCO backs its shakes with a lifetime non-prorated limited warranty and 30- to 40-year fade protection, and our workmanship warranty lasts as long as you own the home.
