HOA-Friendly Metal Roofing

Metal Shingle Roofing for Dallas-Fort Worth Homes

Metal shingles look like the architectural shingles, cedar shake or slate already on your street, but they are stamped from steel or aluminum, interlock on all four sides, and many carry a UL 2218 Class 4 hail rating. In DFW neighborhoods where the HOA wants every roof to match, they are often the easiest way into a metal roof.

What are metal shingles made of?

Metal shingles are steel or aluminum panels stamped to look like dimensional asphalt shingles, cedar shake or slate, then finished with factory paint or a stone-granule coating. Each panel covers several “shingles” and locks into its neighbors with concealed fasteners, so there are no exposed screws to wear out.

Steel or aluminum shingles: which is better in DFW?

For inland DFW, steel usually wins. Galvalume-coated steel is stiffer and resists dents better than aluminum of similar thickness, and inland North Texas is ideal Galvalume territory. Aluminum can’t rust and is the right call on the coast, but here its main trade-off is that it dents more easily in hail.

The finish matters as much as the metal. A PVDF (Kynar 500) finish resists fading and chalking far better than SMP polyester; in one documented side-by-side, an SMP roof looked visibly faded at eight years while the PVDF roof still looked new. For the charcoal and weathered-wood colors popular in DFW, we specify PVDF.

Which metal shingle systems do we install?

Three aluminum systems from Classic Metal Roofing Systems, each with a different face: a low-profile slate, a wood-grain shingle and a deeper slate-rock texture. We install them; ratings and warranty terms are as published by the manufacturer, and we hand you the current documents for the product you choose. Cedar-look panels are covered separately on our metal shake roofing page.

Classic Oxford Shingle: aluminum, low-profile slate look

Oxford Shingle is an interlocking aluminum shingle with a flat, slate-like face and a thin shadow line, the quietest profile of the three from the street. It weighs about 40 pounds per 100 square feet, is finished with Classic’s HI-R reflective coating, and the manufacturer allows installation over an existing roof where code permits. Thirteen colors run from Vermont slate and deep charcoal to terra red and copper penny.

Classic Rustic Shingle: aluminum, four-way interlock, wind rated

Rustic Shingle is a rugged wood-grain aluminum shingle with a four-way interlock on every panel and a published wind rating to 120 mph. It is made from a high-recycled-content aluminum alloy, coated with HI-R reflective pigments, and carries the manufacturer’s lifetime limited warranty. Twelve colors include oceanside blue and forest green alongside the grays and browns that match DFW brick.

Classic Slate Rock Oxford: aluminum with a deeper slate face

Slate Rock Oxford keeps the Oxford interlock and adds a thicker, more textured slate-rock surface under a four-layer PVDF coating. At roughly 40 pounds per 100 square feet it carries the look of real slate, which weighs 650 to 4,000 pounds for the same area, without touching the framing. Colors are green, red, blue and gray. Every profile we install, with how to choose between them, is on our metal roofing systems page.

Will my HOA allow a metal shingle roof?

In most DFW subdivisions, yes. Texas Property Code Section 202.011 says an HOA that allows shingles cannot prohibit shingles designed to resist wind and hail, or that are more energy efficient, as long as they resemble the shingles used or approved in the subdivision, are more durable and of equal or better quality, and match the look of nearby homes.

The statute says “shingles,” which makes metal shingles the clearest fit of any metal roof; standing seam is a grayer area. Architectural review still applies, so we prepare the submittal: samples, a color matched to the street, the Class 4 listing and the statute language. It is a routine request in HOA neighborhoods in Plano, Frisco, McKinney and Allen.

Do metal shingles dent in hail?

They can, but less visibly than flat metal. The embossed texture and shadow lines of a shingle pattern break up small dents, many steel products are UL 2218 Class 4 rated, and unlike asphalt they don’t crack or bruise.

Class 4 means a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet doesn’t crack or rupture the product. TDI lets carriers credit Class 4 roofs, but each company sets the amount, so ask your agent and we’ll supply the documentation. Also ask whether your policy has a cosmetic-damage exclusion for metal; dents that don’t leak may not be covered.

The math still favors durability. Texas wind and hail deductibles typically run 1-5% of dwelling coverage, with 2% common in North Texas, so a home with $450,000 of dwelling coverage pays about $9,000 out of pocket per claim. A roof that rides out storms instead of being replaced every few years avoids paying that again and again.

How do metal shingles compare with standing seam and Class 4 asphalt?

Metal shingles sit between the two: a traditional look and HOA fit like asphalt, with metal’s lifespan and hail performance close to standing seam.

How do metal shingles perform in Texas heat?

Better than asphalt. Painted metal with cool-roof pigments reflects more of the summer sun than dark shingles, and the interlocking profile leaves a small air space that slows heat transfer into the attic.

Research from Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Florida Solar Energy Center found cool metal roofing can cut annual cooling energy by up to 25% compared with dark asphalt, though results depend on color, insulation and ventilation. In climate zone 3A, with about 20 days a year at or above 100 F, we pair metal shingles with high-temperature underlayment rated 240 F or higher and balanced intake and ridge ventilation through vented soffit. Short interlocking panels also absorb thermal movement at every joint, so oil canning is rarely a concern.

Can metal shingles go over existing shingles?

Some systems are approved to go over a single layer of existing shingles where code and the manufacturer allow it, but in DFW we usually recommend a full tear-off. Hail-bruised shingles hide soft or cracked decking, the old layer holds heat, and an uneven base can telegraph through the new roof. Tearing off lets us replace bad decking, install high-temp underlayment and hand you photos for your insurer and HOA. Our guide to metal roofs over shingles in Texas covers the code side.

How much do metal shingles cost in DFW (as of 2026)?

Metal shingles typically run about $10.50 per square foot installed for steel and about $14 for aluminum as of 2026, with mid-grade products at $9-$14 and premium architectural aluminum at $14-$22. That is roughly two to three times architectural asphalt up front. What moves your price:

  • Steel versus aluminum, and PVDF versus SMP or stone-coated finishes
  • Profile: shake and slate styles need more trim pieces
  • Tear-off layers and decking repairs
  • Roof complexity: hips, valleys, dormers and pitch
  • Ventilation upgrades and new gutters

Asphalt in DFW heat and hail often lasts only 15-20 years, so one metal roof can outlast two or three shingle roofs. See how that adds up on our lifetime roofing page.

When should you choose metal shingles over other roofs?

Choose metal shingles when your HOA or your own taste calls for a traditional look and you want metal’s lifespan and hail performance. Choose something else when solar, a modern look or the lowest upfront price leads.

Metal shingle questions from DFW homeowners

Are metal shingles better than standing seam?

Not better, just different. Metal shingles win on traditional looks and HOA approval, since Section 202.011 protects shingles that resemble the neighborhood. Standing seam wins on modern style, low-slope use and clamp-on solar mounting. Both last 40-70 years in Texas.

Do metal shingles dent in hail?

Large hail can dent them, but the embossed shingle pattern hides small dents far better than flat metal, and many steel products are UL 2218 Class 4 rated. Aluminum dents more easily than steel. Check whether your policy has a cosmetic-damage exclusion for metal.

How much do metal shingles cost?

As of 2026, metal shingles typically run about $10.50 per square foot installed for steel and about $14 for aluminum, with premium architectural aluminum at $14-$22. That is roughly two to three times the upfront cost of architectural asphalt.

Will my HOA allow a metal shingle roof?

Usually. Texas Property Code Section 202.011 bars HOAs from prohibiting wind- and hail-resistant or energy-efficient shingles that resemble the subdivision’s approved shingles, are more durable and match nearby homes. Architectural review still applies, and we prepare the submittal for you.

How long do metal shingles last?

Professionally installed metal roofs typically last 40-70 years in Texas, compared with about 15-20 years for asphalt in DFW heat and hail. A PVDF finish keeps the color from fading over that span, and painted Galvalume steel commonly carries a long substrate warranty.

Are metal shingles noisy when it rains?

Not in a typical home. Metal shingles are installed over solid decking and underlayment with attic insulation below, so rain sounds much like it does on asphalt. The drumming people picture comes from metal fastened over open framing on barns and sheds.
