The Metal-Building Standard
AMP PBR Corrugated Metal Panels: The Metal Wall Panel Workhorse for Texas Buildings
Drive past any shop or warehouse in Kaufman County and you are probably looking at PBR. AMP PBR corrugated metal panels are the deep, wide-rib, exposed-fastener panel the metal building industry is built on, with a purlin-bearing leg that makes the side lap stronger and faster to install. Architectural Metal Panels forms PBR in Forney and installs it on the walls and roofs of shops, barns, warehouses and barndominiums across Dallas-Fort Worth.

What Does Purlin Bearing Mean, and Why Does It Matter?
The PBR profile is an R-panel with an extra flat leg on the overlapping edge. That leg sits on the purlin or girt, so the side lap is supported by steel on both sides rather than hanging in the air. The screw at the lap goes through two layers of panel into framing, the lap stays tight, and the panel resists being pushed down or pulled up at its weakest point.
It is a small detail with a large effect. It is the reason PBR became the default for pre-engineered metal buildings and the reason it installs quickly: the leg indexes each panel to the last one. The AMP data describes the profile; the figures marked “typically” are the usual industry values, confirmed on your spec sheet.
| Specification | AMP PBR corrugated panel |
|---|---|
| Profile | Deep, wide trapezoidal major ribs, typically 1.25 inches tall at 12 inches on center, with minor stiffening ribs between them |
| Net coverage | Typically 36 inches per panel |
| Purlin-bearing leg | Flat leg on the overlap edge that bears on the purlin or girt and supports the side lap |
| Gauge options | Typically 26 or 24 gauge; 22 gauge on request |
| Substrate | Galvalume steel (AZ50 under the paint); bare Galvalume (AZ55) on request |
| Finishes | SMP on standard metal-building colors; Kynar 500 PVDF for dark colors and architectural work; bare Galvalume |
| Fastening | Exposed washer-head screws into purlins, girts or deck; stitch screws at side laps |
| Orientation | Vertical on walls; down-slope on roofs |
| Applications | Metal building walls and roofs, shops, barns, warehouses, barndominiums, covered storage, re-skinning older metal buildings |
| Lengths | Cut to length in our Forney shop; typically up to about 40 feet |

Where PBR Panels Go
On the working buildings of North Texas. PBR is the wall and roof skin for metal-frame shops, barns and warehouses, and the usual choice for the shop half of a barndominium.
- Commercial and industrial: warehouses, contractor shops, self-storage, equipment dealerships and the back walls of retail buildings in Forney, Terrell, Mesquite and Garland.
- Agricultural: hay barns, equipment sheds, covered pens and arenas, where cost per square foot and fast installation decide the panel.
- Barndominiums: the shop and garage side, often with the same PBR on the roof and a concealed-fastener wall panel on the living side.
- Re-skins: replacing rusted or hail-damaged panels on an older metal building, where the existing purlin and girt spacing already suits PBR.
How We Install PBR Walls and Roofs
Screwed to purlins and girts at the engineered pattern, with the purlin-bearing leg seated on framing, side laps stitched, and end laps and penetrations sealed. The sequence is quick on open framing, which is where PBR saves the most labor.
Walls
Panels hang from the eave girt down, fastened in the flats to each girt. On a conditioned building we add a weather-resistive barrier and insulation per the plans. Base trim, corners, jamb and head trims and closures come from our custom sheet metal shop in the same color.
Roofs
Panels run eave to ridge over purlins or a solid deck with high-temperature underlayment. Laps get butyl sealant, screws go through the flats on the purlin line, and ridge, eave, rake and pipe flashings are formed to the rib profile. Our metal flashing page shows how we handle the places metal roofs leak.
Over an old metal roof
Where the structure allows it, a retrofit sub-frame can carry new PBR over worn panels without a tear-off. We assess the purlins and the added load before recommending it.
PBR in Hail Alley: Gauge, Washers and Heat
Texas has sat at the top of the national ranking for major hail events for 11 consecutive years, according to NICB, and a PBR roof takes hail square on. 24 gauge resists denting noticeably better than 26, which is why we recommend it on roofs over living space or anything an insurer will inspect; check your policy for a cosmetic-damage exclusion either way.
The washers under thousands of exposed screws are the maintenance item. Texas UV and heat cycling age them, typically within 10 to 15 years. We inspect for backed-out screws after major storms and plan a full fastener check around year 10.
Long roof panels expand on 100-degree afternoons and contract in hard freezes, and every screw pins the sheet. We keep panel lengths practical and follow the fastener pattern at eaves, corners and ridges, which is where the March 2025 straight-line winds across DFW did their damage. For finish, SMP is common on metal-building colors; for dark colors or a long warranty, specify Kynar 500 PVDF. See Kynar 500 vs SMP.
PBR Corrugated vs PBR Wall Panel vs 7.2 Rib
The AMP PBR Wall Panel is the semi-concealed-fastener version: screws sit in recessed channels, giving a flatter face and a wainscot look for the front of a building. The 7.2 Rib is a symmetrical 1.5-inch trapezoid for a bolder look and longer spans. Standard PBR is the economical skin for everything else.
| Factor | PBR corrugated | PBR Wall Panel | 7.2 Rib |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fasteners | Exposed | Semi-concealed, in recessed channels | Exposed |
| Face | Deep, wide ribs | Smooth, flat appearance | Bold symmetrical ribs |
| Roof use | Yes | Wall only | Yes |
| Typical place | Shop and barn walls and roofs | Fronts and wainscots | Walls and roofs that share a look |
Every profile is listed on our metal wall panels page.
Ordering PBR for a Metal Building
Send plans, purlin and girt spacing, or the measurements of the building you are re-skinning. The quote lists panels by length, trims, closures, fasteners and labor, so you can compare full installation against a materials-only package. Spec sheets, submittals and engineering data are available through the free price quote form, and stock metal-building colors typically ship within a few weeks.

What Dallas-Fort Worth Homeowners Say About Architectural Metal Panels
PBR Panel Questions
What is the difference between PBR and R-panel?
The profile is the same; PBR adds a purlin-bearing leg on the overlap edge so the side lap sits on framing. That makes the lap stronger and the installation faster. Most metal-building suppliers in Texas now treat PBR as the standard.
Can PBR be used on a barndominium roof over living space?
Yes, with solid decking or insulation, condensation control and a 24-gauge panel in a Kynar finish. Many owners put standing seam over the living area and PBR over the shop; both approaches work when detailed correctly.
How long do PBR panels last in Texas?
Painted Galvalume steel typically lasts 40 years or more; the screw washers need attention at roughly 10 to 15 years. The finish choice decides how long the color holds.
What gauge is PBR available in?
Typically 26 or 24 gauge, with 22 gauge on request. We recommend 24 gauge for roofs in Hail Alley and for walls that take contact.
Do you sell PBR panels only, without installation?
Yes. We cut panels to your lengths in Forney, form matching trims and closures and supply fasteners for contractors and owner-builders, and we can install material you already bought.
