Benefits of Metal Roofing in Texas, and the Honest Limits

The benefits of metal roofing in Texas are measurable: Class 4 hail ratings, a 40-to-70-year service life, cooler attics and insurance credits that most shingle roofs never earn. The limits are measurable too, and we would rather you hear them from us than discover them later. Architectural Metal Panels installs metal roofs across Dallas-Fort Worth from our shop in Forney; here is what the sourced numbers say.

What Are the Real Benefits of a Metal Roof in Texas?

Nine, in roughly the order DFW homeowners care about them: hail resistance, wind resistance, lifespan, cooling savings, insurance credits, fire rating, low weight, recyclability and solar readiness. Resale is the tenth, and the one we refuse to put a number on.

  • Hail: UL 2218 Class 4 assemblies available, the rating Texas insurers reward most.
  • Wind: concealed clips and locked seams instead of nails and seal strips.
  • Lifespan: typically 40 to 70 years, against 15 to 20 for shingles in DFW.
  • Cooling: cool-pigment finishes reflect sun that dark granules absorb.
  • Insurance: Class 4 credits, set by each carrier, on a line item that only goes up.
  • Fire, weight, recyclability and solar: Class A assemblies, lighter than shingles, fully recyclable and the easiest roof to clamp an array onto.

How Does a Metal Roof Handle Texas Hail and Wind?

Better than any shingle, with one honest caveat: Class 4 means the panel does not crack or split, not that it cannot dent. Texas has led the country in major hail events for 11 straight years, so this is the benefit that matters first.

What does a Class 4 rating actually test?

UL 2218 drops steel balls onto a roofing sample; at Class 4, a 2-inch ball falls 20 feet and the material must show no crack or rupture. Many of the standing seam, metal shingle, shake and stone-coated systems we install carry that rating, and we tell you which before you choose. Insurance-industry research has found that homes with impact-resistant roofs file hail claims about 40% less often, with roughly 55% lower losses.

Will it dent?

In the biggest hail, yes. On April 28, 2026, preliminary reports put 4.5-inch stones near Cresson and Godley, south of Fort Worth, and stones that size mark any roof. 24-gauge steel, roughly 28% thicker than 26 gauge, shows fewer dents than thin panels, and textured metal shingles or granule-faced stone-coated tile hide the marks a flat pan would show. Read 24-gauge vs 26-gauge before you pick a value tier.

How does metal hold up in DFW wind?

Standing seam attaches with concealed clips screwed to the deck and seams locked along the panel’s full length, so there is no tab for a gust to lift. Mechanically seamed panels carry the highest uplift ratings, and interlocking shingles such as the Classic Rustic Shingle are rated to 120 mph. That matters after the May 28, 2024 storm pushed DFW gusts to about 80 mph and March 2025 brought 105 mph straight-line winds to Haltom City. No roof is tornado-proof.

How Long Does a Metal Roof Last in Texas Sun?

Typically 40 to 70 years with minimal maintenance, versus 15 to 20 years for asphalt shingles in DFW heat and hail. A shingle rated for 30 years in a mild climate rarely sees 20 here.

The reason is what the sun does to each material. Dallas summers average about 20 days at or above 100 F (55 in 2023), with a UV index that routinely reaches 9 to 10. Asphalt dries out and cracks; painted steel simply expands and contracts, which is why we install it on floating clips. The warranties follow the physics: painted Galvalume substrate warranties commonly run 50 years, Kynar 500 finish warranties typically 30 to 35 years against chalk and fade, and our workmanship coverage is a transferable lifetime warranty. The lifetime roofing page runs the cost-per-year math.

Does a Metal Roof Lower Cooling Costs in Texas?

It can, and the research is older and more careful than most roofing claims. Oak Ridge National Laboratory found cool metal roofing can cut annual cooling energy costs by up to 25% compared with dark-gray asphalt shingles, and Florida Solar Energy Center field tests measured 18% to 26% lower cooling energy and 28% to 35% lower peak demand with reflective roofs.

Those are upper bounds, not promises. Your result depends on color, attic insulation, ventilation and HVAC, and a dark bronze roof reflects far less than a light gray one. DFW sits in climate zone 3A, where cooling is the load that matters, so we show you the Cool Roof Rating Council values for each color you are considering and pair the roof with a vented ridge and open soffits so the attic can shed heat. Air moving under the panels adds to the effect.

Will Insurance Give You a Credit for a Class 4 Metal Roof?

Probably, but the size is your carrier’s call. Texas Department of Insurance guidance requires UL 2218 testing for an impact-resistant credit and gives Class 4 the highest tier, yet it leaves the amount to each company. Reported credits run roughly 5% to 35% of the wind and hail portion of the premium.

Context makes the credit worth chasing. Texas homeowners premiums average roughly $3,500 to $3,900 statewide, and DFW single-family policies commonly run $5,400 to $6,200 a year as of 2026, driven largely by hail. Two things to read before you count on a discount: the cosmetic-damage exclusion, an endorsement TDI first approved in 1998 that can leave dents that do not leak uncovered, and actual cash value schedules, which many carriers now apply to roofs older than 10 to 20 years. We provide product labels, Class 4 documents and a signed installation certificate; the full picture is in what Texas carriers actually give for Class 4 metal roofs. None of this is insurance advice; your agent has your policy.

Fire Rating, Weight, Recyclability, Solar and Resale

Five smaller benefits that decide the sale for some homeowners and never come up for others.

Is a metal roof fire resistant?

Metal is non-combustible, and many metal roof assemblies are tested to Class A under UL 790 and ASTM E108, the highest rating, when installed over approved underlayment. Wind-blown embers do not ignite it, which matters on the grassland edges of Parker, Johnson and Denton counties.

How much does a metal roof weigh?

Steel panels typically weigh around 1 to 1.5 pounds per square foot and aluminum less, while architectural shingles commonly run 2.5 to 4. That is why a metal roof can often go over a single layer of shingles without overloading the framing, and why metal tile replaces concrete tile on homes never built for it.

Is metal roofing recyclable?

Fully. Steel and aluminum panels contain recycled content, with aluminum shingle makers citing 90% or more, and every panel is recyclable at the end of its life. A shingle tear-off mostly goes to a landfill.

Is a metal roof better for solar?

Standing seam is the easiest residential roof for solar. Clamps grip the seams with set screws, so the array mounts without holes through the roof, and a roof that outlasts the panels never needs to come off mid-array. Texas Property Code 202.010 protects your right to add solar devices. Details on solar panels on metal roofing.

Does a metal roof raise resale value?

We do not quote a percentage, because the studies that do are national and dated. What buyers and appraisers in a hail market respond to is concrete: a roof that will not need replacing, Class 4 paperwork the next owner can hand to an insurer, and a warranty that transfers with the deed.

What Are the Honest Limits of a Metal Roof?

Seven, and a good installer will raise every one of them before you ask.

  • Upfront cost. Metal typically costs two to three times as much as architectural shingles, which run about $5.00 to $8.50 per square foot installed as of 2026. Our 24-gauge Kynar standing seam price is $15 per square foot of roof as of October 2026; see the metal roof cost page for worked examples. The math favors metal over 30 years, not over three.
  • Dents on thin gauges. 26-gauge and especially 29-gauge panels show hail marks that 24-gauge does not, and flat pans show them more than textured profiles. If your policy carries a cosmetic exclusion, those dents are yours to live with or pay for.
  • Oil canning. Slight waviness in flat panels is inherent to cold-formed sheet metal and not a defect. Striations, 24-gauge steel, narrower pans, low-gloss finishes and a flat deck keep it hard to see; nothing eliminates it. Our oil canning guide shows what to expect.
  • The noise myth, and where it is true. On a decked, insulated house, rain on metal is not noticeably louder than on shingles. On an open-framed barn or patio cover with nothing under the panels, it is.
  • Exposed-fastener upkeep. Corrugated and R-panel roofs rely on rubber-washer screws that Texas UV and heat cycling age in 10 to 15 years. That is a maintenance item, not a reason to avoid concealed-clip systems.
  • Color matching later. Kynar fades slowly, but a panel replaced in year 15 will read slightly brighter than its neighbors. Our metal roof repair page explains how we handle it.
  • HOA review for standing seam. Property Code 202.011 protects impact-resistant shingles that match the neighborhood, and never mentions standing seam, so it goes to the architectural committee. We prepare the submittal.

One more: metal is unforgiving of a careless installer, and most leaks we repair trace to flashing, not panels. Compare systems in our types of metal roofing guide, read why asphalt roofs fail in Texas for the other side, and start at the residential metal roofing hub for everything we install across our service area.

What Dallas-Fort Worth Homeowners Say About Architectural Metal Panels

Metal Roof Benefits: Questions Texas Homeowners Ask

Is a metal roof worth it in Texas?

For most homeowners who plan to stay more than a few years, yes. One metal roof typically lasts 40 to 70 years in Texas, which replaces two or three shingle roofs, and Class 4 systems earn the highest impact-resistant insurance credit carriers offer. If you may sell within a few years, the upfront premium may not pay back before you move.

How much can a Class 4 metal roof save on insurance in Texas?

Nobody can promise a figure. The Texas Department of Insurance requires UL 2218 testing for a credit and gives Class 4 the highest tier, but each carrier sets its own amount. Reported credits run roughly 5% to 35% of the wind and hail portion of the premium. We supply the rating documents and a signed installation certificate; your carrier decides.

Does a metal roof make a house hotter in Texas?

No. A light or cool-pigment metal roof typically keeps the attic cooler than dark shingles. Oak Ridge National Laboratory research, backed by Florida Solar Energy Center field tests, found cool metal roofing can cut cooling energy costs by up to about 25% against dark-gray shingles. Insulation, ventilation and color decide your actual result.

Do metal roofs attract lightning?

No. Lightning strikes the tallest object in an area regardless of material. A metal roof is non-combustible and conducts a strike safely to ground when the home has a lightning protection system, which is why many lightning protection specialists prefer it.

Is a metal roof noisy when it rains?

Not on a house. Solid decking, high-temperature underlayment, the attic and insulation absorb the sound, and most owners describe rain on a residential metal roof as no louder than on shingles. The drumming people remember comes from open-framed barns and carports with nothing under the panels.

What are the disadvantages of a metal roof?

Higher upfront cost, typically two to three times architectural shingles; cosmetic dents from very large hail, especially on thin gauges and flat pans; some oil canning on flat panels; extra fastener maintenance on exposed-fastener systems; color matching on later repairs as the finish ages; and architectural review for standing seam in HOA neighborhoods. We cover each one on this page.

How much more does a metal roof cost than shingles in DFW?

As of 2026, architectural shingles typically run about $5.00 to $8.50 per square foot installed, while our 24-gauge Kynar standing seam price is $15 per square foot of roof as of October 2026. Metal costs more once; shingles cost less two or three times over the same 40 years. Our metal roof cost page has worked examples.
