Metal wall panel installation looks simple from the ground: panels, screws, trim. The failures we are called to fix around Dallas-Fort Worth say otherwise. Oil canning, buckled panels, rust streaks at the screws, water behind the cladding and trim that does not match are installation problems, not product problems, and most of them show up in the first Texas summer.
This post walks through what goes wrong on DIY and general-trade installs, what a fabricator-installer does differently, the questions to ask before you sign, and what a bad install costs to fix later. Our metal wall panels hub covers the panels themselves; for a number on your project, request a free price quote.
What goes wrong when wall panels are installed by a general trade or DIY?
Five mistakes account for nearly every callback we see, and none of them is visible on the day the job is finished.
Oil canning from over-driven fasteners
Oil canning is the wavy, rippled look in the flat area of a panel. Some of it is inherent to light-gauge sheet metal, but most of what you see on a bad install was put there by the installer: screws driven until the washer flattens, clips pinned tight, panels forced over framing that is not in plane. Thicker gauge, striations or ribs, narrower panels, torque-limited drivers and a flat substrate keep it to a minimum. Once a panel is dimpled at every screw, no adjustment takes it out.
No allowance for thermal movement
DFW averages about 20 days a year at or above 100°F and, in January 2024, sat at or below freezing for 89 straight hours. A dark panel in afternoon sun runs far hotter than the air. A 20-foot steel panel grows roughly 1/8 to 3/16 inch across a 100-degree swing, and aluminum about twice that. Fastened rigidly at both ends, it buckles or wallows out its holes. Concealed-fastener panels on clips, a single fixed point and trims that let the panel slide are the fix.
Wrong substrate and furring
Panels need flat, continuous support: sheathing, or hat-channel and Z-girt furring shimmed into one plane. Over brick, block or old siding they need furring plus a drainage gap. Framing that is 3/8 inch out between studs reads as a wave in every panel across it. Aluminum composite panels are less forgiving still, since a rout-and-return system telegraphs every bump in the backing.
Missing weather barrier and bad flashing at openings
Metal panels are cladding, not waterproofing. The residential code adopted across DFW requires a water-resistive barrier behind exterior cladding, lapped shingle-fashion, with head flashing over every window and door opening. DFW summers are humid, so a wall that gets wet behind the panel and cannot dry rots its sheathing within a few years. Installers who skip the barrier, or run the jamb trim over the head flashing instead of under it, build exactly that wall.
Mismatched finishes, trims and fasteners
Trims bent from a different coil, or a silicone-modified polyester (SMP) trim next to a Kynar 500 (PVDF) panel, fade at different rates; the mismatch is invisible at install and obvious after three summers. Zinc-plated screws rust and streak, metal shavings left on the panels rust into the paint, and copper or treated lumber touching steel or aluminum corrodes it. Exposed-fastener systems that rely on rubber-washer screws typically need attention within 10 to 15 years in Texas sun even when installed well; installed badly, sooner.
What does a fabricator-installer do differently?
The people who measure your walls are the people who bend the metal and the people who hang it. That closes the gaps where most problems start.
- Shop drawings: panel layout, start points, where cuts fall at corners and openings, and the reveal at every trim, approved before anything is ordered.
- Cut-to-length panels from one coil lot: no field splices and no color-lot change halfway across a wall.
- Trims made to match: corners, J-channel, head flashing with end dams, base and drip trims bent in our shop from the same coil and finish as the panels, with hemmed edges.
- An attachment plan: fastener type, pattern and torque set for the panel and the wind; DFW gusts reached about 80 mph in the May 2024 storms.
- A written sequence: substrate check, furring plan, weather barrier and flashing order spelled out in the scope.
- Clean-up: shavings blown off daily, cut edges touched up, protective film removed on schedule.
That applies to every system we install: the concealed-fastener AMP Wave 16-4 with 16-inch coverage, our corrugated metal wall panels, and aluminum composite panels for storefronts, fascias and canopies.
| System | Fastening | Oil-canning risk | Thermal movement | Substrate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Concealed-fastener (AMP Wave 16-4, 12-3) | Hidden clips, no exposed screws | Low: the waves stiffen the face | Clips let panels float | Sheathing or furring in one plane |
| Exposed-fastener corrugated (AMP 2.67 x 5, 7.2 Rib) | Screws with sealing washers through the panel | Low on corrugations; rises when screws are over-driven | Washers must stay seated as panels move | Furring or girts |
| Aluminum composite (ACM) | Rout-and-return or dry-joint extrusions | Flat faces show every substrate flaw | Joint gaps sized for aluminum | Continuous flat backing with a drained cavity |
What questions should you ask a wall panel installer?
Eight questions separate a fabricator-installer from a crew that hangs whatever arrives on the truck.
- Who fabricates the trims, and are they bent from the same coil and finish as the panels?
- Is the finish PVDF (Kynar 500) or SMP, and what is the written finish warranty?
- Which fastener is specified, and how do you prevent over-driving?
- Where is the fixed point on each panel, and how is movement handled at the trims?
- What goes behind the panel: weather barrier, furring, drainage gap?
- Can I see shop drawings before material is ordered?
- Who flashes the windows, doors and penetrations, and in what order?
- What is the workmanship warranty, and can I see your insurance certificate?
Texas has no state license for this trade, so the certificate of insurance and a physical local address are what you check instead. Any contract signed at your home also carries a three-business-day right to cancel under Texas law, and a legitimate installer will hand you that notice without being asked.
What does it cost to fix a bad install later?
More than the install cost in the first place. Over-driven or creased panels cannot be undented; they are replaced. A re-do means buying panels and trim twice, paying labor twice, and repairing whatever got wet behind the first set. Water behind cladding in a DFW summer can take two or three years to show as staining or a soft wall, by which point the sheathing and sometimes the framing are part of the job.
The cheaper path is a correct install the first time: panels and trims from one shop, an attachment plan, a weather barrier and flashing sequence in writing, and a lifetime workmanship warranty behind it. Manufacturer PVDF finish warranties typically run 30 to 35 years against chalk and fade, but only on panels installed to the manufacturer’s instructions.
How does Architectural Metal Panels install wall panels?
- Site measure and substrate check: we string the walls, note every opening and decide furring before anything is priced.
- Shop drawings: a submittal package or spec sheet for architects and general contractors; a written, itemized estimate for homeowners.
- Fabrication in Forney: panels cut to length and trims bent to match from the same coil.
- Weather barrier, furring and flashing at every opening, in the right order.
- Panels and trims, with torque-limited drivers and a fixed-point plan for movement.
- Walkthrough, clean-up and warranty paperwork.
Commercial projects can pair wall panels with our commercial metal roofing, and the trims come from the same shop as our custom sheet metal work. Our team brings 26+ years of metal panel experience to every wall. Call (469) 569-3956 or send plans for a submittal package.
Wall panel installation questions DFW owners ask us
Can I install metal wall panels myself?
On a shed or a small accent wall with an exposed-fastener panel, a careful DIYer can. On a house or storefront, the failures are in details you cannot see afterward: over-driven screws, no thermal allowance, a missing weather barrier and bad flashing at openings. Those are the jobs we are called to redo.
What causes oil canning in metal wall panels?
Some waviness is inherent in flat, light-gauge sheet metal. Most visible oil canning comes from over-driven fasteners, pinned clips, uneven framing and wide flat panels in dark colors. Thicker gauge, striated or ribbed profiles, narrower panels, a flat substrate and correct fastening keep it to a minimum.
Do metal wall panels need a weather barrier behind them?
Yes. Panels shed most water but are not the waterproof layer. A water-resistive barrier lapped over flashing at every opening is required by the residential code adopted across DFW, and the cavity behind the panel should be able to drain and dry.
How much does metal wall panel installation cost in DFW?
It depends on the panel system, gauge and finish, the wall’s substrate and furring, the number of openings and trims, and whether it is a residential accent wall or a commercial elevation. Request a free price quote and we will measure the walls and give you a written, itemized number.
Can metal wall panels be installed over brick or existing siding?
Usually, with furring. Panels need a flat plane and a drainage gap, so we fasten hat channel or Z-girts through the brick or siding into the framing, add a weather barrier where needed and hang the panels on that. Loose or rotten siding comes off first.
