Box, half-round and custom gutters, bent in Forney
Gutter Fabrication for Contractors and Builders: Box, Half-Round and Custom Profiles
Gutter fabrication at Architectural Metal Panels covers the profiles a standard gutter machine cannot make: built-in and commercial box gutters, liners, half-round runs, custom shapes drawn to a detail, and the downspouts and eave trim that go with them. Every piece is bent in our Forney shop for roofers, builders, general contractors and owners with their own installer.
Which Gutter Profiles Does the Shop Fabricate?
Four families cover most of the drainage work we are asked for. Pick by roof edge first: a parapet or built-in eave points to a box gutter, a traditional facade to half-round.
| Profile | Where it is used | Metals | Shop notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box gutters | Built-in gutters, parapet roofs, commercial eaves | Painted steel, copper, zinc | Drawn to the opening; expansion details on long runs |
| Box gutter liners | Relining an existing built-in gutter | Painted steel, copper, zinc | Made to the measured trough so the liner sits tight |
| Half-round | Traditional homes, stone and brick facades, copper accents | Painted steel, copper, zinc | Round profile with matching end caps and outlets |
| Custom profiles | Matching an existing gutter, architectural fascia gutters | Per the design | Drawn from a sketch or sample before bending |
Downspouts are made to suit each gutter, in the same metal and color. Color and gauge follow your roof or wall panels when they come from the same coil.
How Should a Gutter Be Sized for a Large Texas Roof?
Size the gutter and downspouts from the roof area that drains to them, the roof slope, the local rainfall intensity and the number of outlets. A gutter that looks generous on paper can still overflow if one outlet has to carry half a big roof.
Many designers follow the sizing method in the SMACNA Architectural Sheet Metal Manual, which works from design rainfall and drainage area. On a commercial job the drawings usually show the size; on a custom home the roofer or builder often decides.
- Mark each drainage area on the roof plan and the outlet that serves it.
- Add outlets before upsizing the gutter; more downspouts often solve the problem for less.
- Keep valleys from dumping onto a single short gutter section.
- Check where each downspout will discharge before its location is final.
Our gutter and downspout sizing guide walks through the method with examples. Send the plan and we can check a layout before anything is cut.
Box Gutters and Liners for Commercial and Historic Roofs
A box gutter sits inside the roof edge or behind a parapet instead of hanging off the fascia. It moves a lot of water, but it has to be built carefully because a leak spills into the building, not onto the ground.
- Built-in box gutters are drawn to the framed opening, with laps, outlets and end dams detailed before fabrication.
- Commercial box gutters handle the large roof areas of churches, schools and retail buildings.
- Liners drop into an existing built-in gutter whose old lining has failed, measured to the trough.
- Expansion joints break up a long run, so summer heat and winter cold can lengthen and shorten the trough while the outlets stay sealed.
The full detail list is on our box gutters page, and box gutters explained covers when a building needs one. Edge metal for the same roof is on the commercial panels and edge metal page.
Copper and Zinc Gutters
Copper and zinc gutters weather with the building instead of being painted. Half-round copper with copper downspouts is the classic pairing on stone and brick homes.
Both metals are joined by soldering, and they bring their own rules. Keep copper runoff away from steel, aluminum or zinc parts below it, and use fasteners that suit the metal. The copper and zinc fabrication page covers those details and the matching roof work.
Eave Trim That Ties the Gutter to the Roof
A gutter only works if the water reaches it. The trim at the eave decides that, so we bend it from the same coil as the roof panels where possible.
- Drip edge and gutter apron carry water past the fascia and into the gutter.
- Fascia cladding wraps the board behind the gutter in a color-matched metal face.
- Eave trim for metal roofs sets the panel overhang so water lands in the trough rather than overshooting it.
- Kick-out flashing steers water into the gutter where a roof edge meets a wall.
See metal flashing for the full trim range, and the roof panels page for the panels the trim is matched to.
What to Send for a Gutter Fabrication Quote
A complete takeoff lets us price the order in one pass.
- Run lengths, measured along the eave, with inside and outside corners marked.
- Outlet and downspout locations, plus the wall height each downspout drops.
- Profile and size, or the roof area and slope so we can suggest one.
- Metal and color, ideally matched to the roof or wall panels.
- The hanger or bracket the installer plans to use, so the profile fits it.
- Pickup at the Forney shop or delivery to the job.
We confirm the longest piece and the ship date with the quote. Contractors who order regularly should see the for contractors page. Only need gutters put up on a house? DTX Seamless is a gutter contractor working across Dallas-Fort Worth.
Gutter Fabrication Questions
Can you match a gutter profile that is no longer made?
Often. Send a short sample or a photo with the front height, back height, bottom width and any bead or lip dimensions. We draw the profile for approval before it is bent.
Do you fabricate box gutter liners for an existing building?
Yes. Measure the trough at several points along its length, because older built-in gutters are rarely uniform. The liner is made to those numbers.
Which metals can a gutter be made from?
Painted steel to match the roof panels, copper and zinc are the usual choices from our shop. Tell us if the design calls for something else and we will confirm what we can supply.
Will the gutter color match my metal roof?
When the gutter and roof come from the same paint line, yes. Ordering them together is the simplest way to get a true match.
How do I know how many downspouts a roof needs?
Start from the roof area that drains to each outlet and the local rainfall intensity. Send the roof plan and we can check the outlet layout with the quote.
Can the downspouts match the gutter?
Yes. Downspouts are made in the same metal and color as the gutter they serve, so the whole drainage run matches. List the outlets and wall heights and we size the order.
